Many people think that getting four to six hours of sleep is enough to keep themselves energized throughout the day. However, it is proven that we should be getting between seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Getting enough sleep is very beneficial to your health because you will experience less stress. Without enough sleep, your body will not be able to function properly and this can have negative effects on you both mentally and physically.

Sleep specialists have proven that your body is put at severe risk when you’re deprived of your sleep. This affects your heart, lungs, kidneys, appetite, weight, and much more. It can also affect your mental state because you can start to experience depression and post- traumatic stress disorder. Lack of sleep can also lead to substance abuse. For example, some people who don’t get enough sleep may take pills to keep them energized through the day. Also, sleep deprivation can lead to a short attention span and lack of alertness, which can greatly affect your performance in school or in a workplace.

I am also a victim of being sleep deprived. As a high school student, there are times when I let my procrastination get the best of me. This causes me to end up working late at night until one in the morning, even when I know I have to get up at six in the morning for school. However, most nights I get a full eight hours of sleep, even if I didn’t get all my studying or homework done. I am proud to say that because I get enough sleep, I am more alert and less likely to fall asleep during class. I also have a more optimistic attitude through the day. Always remember to get your full eight hours of sleep to live a healthier and more positive lifestyle.
